Step Up Your Home’s Style with Contemporary Stair Runners

In this article, we will show you that it’s not too difficult to make a design statement for your staircase and change the whole look of your home. With the help of your carpet retailer, you can add warmth, texture and colour with carpet stair runners.

Where good design does not equate to bad practicality, stair runners are increasingly popular in Australia for those who want the best of both worlds.

Besides making your stairway more stylish, a stair runner adds an extra grip on the steps, which provides more safety and prevents you from slipping on the stairs, especially if you have younger kids or older people at home who need to navigate them.

Variety is the Spice of Life

There are various options if you need stair runners with carpet in Australia, as the collections have bold prints, colours and textures that provide that contemporary feel.

Stair runners can be installed by a professional or a confident DIYer. It’s just a matter of measuring your steps, choosing the right padding for comfort and longevity, and ensuring your runner is securely laid for a smooth and perfect finish.

Many times, by the time the runner has been laid, you can hardly tell that it’s been added afterwards; it looks like it’s been tailored to be there.

Aesthetically Outstanding

Of course, modern stair runners are about making a statement. They may be the centrepiece of an entryway or a subtle reference to the decorative style of the home’s entire aesthetic.

With the right materials and patterns, stair carpets can be a functional and fashionable way to enhance your living space.

Stair runners are a great way to add style and panache to your home. They add safety, comfort and sometimes a little glamour, all without taking away from the essence or nature of the stairs.

Sometimes, it’s the small things that really make the difference. Don’t hesitate any longer if you want to take things one step further and give your stairs the makeover they’ve been waiting for. Go for it!

What Materials Are Used

A Stair runner is an extra layer of material installed on the steps of stairs that beautifies stairs while curbing accidents. There are different varieties of stair runners. These include:

  • Wool
  • Sisal
  • Nylon
  • Polyester
  • Polypropylene
  • Wool: Probably the softest and most durable of all stair runners. Wool also comes with naturally stain-resistant properties, making it a smart choice for homes with children or pets. It also holds up beautifully with high foot traffic.
  • Nylon: This synthetic fibre has a good spring and takes colour well; nylon stair runners can be cheaper than wool and hold up to mould and mildew better.
  • Polyester: A plastic material, polyester is known for its silky feel and sheen, making it a more economical option for faux leather goods. Polyester products come with good durability and stain resistance.
  • Sisal: Naturally derived from the agave plant and available for the eco-conscious, sisal has a unique texture and rustic aesthetic.
  • Polypropylene: A water-resistant synthetic alternative that is easy to clean, making it a good choice for families with pets and/or small children.

The Manufacturing Process of Stair Runners

  • Material Selection: The first step in moulding is choosing the material; this depends on the properties of the end product and the heat required to melt the crystal.
  • Spinning: Yarn is created from natural fibres (wool, sisal, etc.) and extruded by specialists. Some yarns are created from natural fibres, while others are extruded into fibres first, often with the aid of an extruder.
  • Colouring: Fibres are then dyed to get their colour. This is done before and sometimes after the spinning, depending on the nature of the fibre and the dyeing process.
  • Yarnling or Cone to Loom: The yarn is now woven or tufted onto the carpet. At this stage, the yarn loops on the loom are in rows and will later be hooked, cut or clipped. In weaving, rows of loops are interlaced with weft yarns; in tufting, rows of yarn tufts are punched through a backing onto the supporting frame.
  • Finishing: When weaving or tufting is complete, the carpet is given a second backing to make it more stable and durable; it may also be treated with stain protectants or other finishes.
  • Cutting: The carpet is then cut to the specific dimensions needed for stair runners.

After the carpet is cut, the edges are bound with tape to keep them from fraying and cover the tackless strips.

  • Inspection And Delivery: Stair runners are inspected thoroughly for quality and rolled for delivery to stores or consumers.
